The Strong Hands of Taos Pueblo
Drum Maker, Lee Lujan
By Rebekah Powers | May 2022
Chimayo Trading just received a large collection of drums made by one of the most known and respected drum makers in all of the Southwest, Lee Lujan from Taos Pueblo.
It is a rare event to be able to offer for sale this exquisite variety of shapes and sizes of Native American drums. If you hold one of the ceremonial hand drums up to the light, there is a translucent amber quality to the buffalo hide that resembles parchment and the detailed craftsmanship that make these instruments a specialized art form in themselves.
Lee LujanLee takes special care every step of the way, making the beaters with 2 types of leather and he even takes the time to find just the right stick. Every step in his process is a prayer and an offering. We are fortunate to feature this humble artist whose own voice reverberates low and resonates with meaning, just like the drums he creates.
Drumming is the heartbeat of the culture of native people, an integral part of every procession, every sacred ceremony. Acquiring one of these instruments of the Great Spirit is an act of affirmation, a bridge to join past and present, and an opportunity to share in the long held tradition of Pueblo people.
Lee LujanFrom his studio at the base of Taos Mountain, he creates each unique drum from just the right cottonwood trunk, hollowed with patience and precision for the purest sound vibration. He covers it with hide processed by his strong, skilled hands.
Time and temperature affect the voice of the drum as each one vibrates with its unique soundscape. Every drum includes a willow and soft-skin drum beater, allowing you to find your personal rhythm. Through one of Lujan’s drums, you connect with the authentic history of the people and you join hands with that of one of the most conscientious and skilled artisans of Taos Pueblo, Lee Lujan.
His strong hands stretch the life of the Buffalo across time,
and extend the ways of his people into the future.
