This is a beautiful example of a classic Navajo sterling silver necklace consisting of a long strand of large, handcrafted sterling silver beads. The beads are elongated, tapered, and somewhat spindle-shaped (sometimes referred to as “melon” or “diamond-cut” style), giving the piece substantial weight and a bold, traditional presence. The silver shows a nice patina and oxidation consistent with a vintage piece, adding character and depth.
The standout feature is the large Naja pendant. At the top is a triangular silver element set in the cabochon is natural Morenci turquoise from the Morenci Copper Mine in southeastern Arizona, now long closed. Morenci turquoise is highly collectible precisely because of this combination of rich color and the silvery pyrite matrix. Below the stone, the classic crescent-shaped naja constructed with heavy-gauge silver and displays traditional Navajo stamping and repoussé details.
The Naja is one of the most iconic symbols in Navajo-Diné jewelry. Originally influenced by Spanish and Moorish designs (the word “naja” comes from the Spanish for “crescent”), it has been fully adopted into Navajo silversmithing. It is often believed to represent protection, good fortune, and the shape of a horse’s shoe or the moon.
This style remains highly collectible and pairs beautifully with both contemporary and traditional outfits. It would be a strong addition to any Native American or Southwestern jewelry collection.
