This is a bold, substantial Navajo sterling silver cuff bracelet by Jerry Roan (1919–1977), a respected Navajo-Diné silversmith known for his heavy-gauge work, intricate stamp work, and use of high-quality turquoise during the mid-to-late 20th century. Roan began actively silversmithing around 1968 and produced many award-winning pieces featuring large statement stones and detailed silver embellishments. The overall aesthetic is classic mid-20th-century Navajo “statement” jewelry: bold, symmetrical yet organic, and meant to showcase both the silversmith’s skill and the natural beauty of the large oval cabochon of Morenci turquoise from the Morenci Copper Mine in southeastern Arizona, now long closed. The stone is bezel-set in a raised, multi-layered silver setting. Morenci turquoise is highly collectible precisely because of this combination of rich color and the silvery pyrite matrix. This is a powerful, wearable example of vintage Navajo silver artistry and is substantial in weight and presence, yet elegantly detailed.
