Micaceous clay is sourced from sacred sites on pueblo lands, naturally contains mica flakes that give the finished pieces a distinctive sparkling, golden, or shimmering appearance (often described as “glittery”). The mica also makes the pottery functional for cooking or holding liquids, as it seals well and withstands heat. Yazzie’s pieces are hand-coiled (built from rolled coils of clay, no wheel), smoothed, and pit-fired outdoors using wood (like cedar), bark, or other fuels, which creates unique fire clouds (blotchy dark markings from the firing process) and varied color tones ranging from golden/orange to black (sometimes achieved through reduction firing).
