“AAAAA #70” by Larry Bell 2007

Now residing in Taos since the 1970s, Larry Bell is one of the most renowned and influential artists to emerge from the Los Angeles art scene of the 1960s. Known for his refined surface treatment of glass and his explorations of light, reflection and shadow, Bell embraces a practice that extends from painting and works on paper to glass sculptures and furniture design. Since 1969, his studio has developed a high-vacuum system for coating thin metal films onto materials, creating ethereal effects of light and color.

The Vapor Drawings, began in 1978, are a series of works on paper created with the same technology Larry Bell used to deposit the thin films on the glass works. While the concurrent glass works and furniture was labor intensive and slow, the Vapor Drawings allowed Bell to work quickly, intuitively, with spontaneity and improvisation. Because paper has different surface qualities than glass, more tooth, it accepted the thin films in unique ways, yielding a multitude of effects and vibrant spectrum of colors.
