New Paintings From
Michelle Tsosie Sisneros
A consummate professional and highly regarded contemporary artist of Santa Clara Pueblo, Navajo and Laguna descent, Michelle Tsosie Sisneros never fails to deliver with an exciting exhibition of new works for sale.
Niece of Pablita Velarde, the famous Santa Clara painter and the grandmother of the Pueblo Flat Painters who may be the most famous female painter in Native American history. Sisneros has carved her own place in contemporary Native American painting with traditional Native American themes with abstract elements and surrealist influences.
“Ises”, Acrylic/Pastel on Paper – 13” x 9”
Winner of many prestigious awards and distinguished honors, she remains humble and says of her work…
“I paint from my soul.
The images are from the people who touch my life in a profound way and the Mother Earth I live on.”
“Ancestral Blessings”, Acrylic on Watercolor Paper – 13” x 9”
In addition to the rich, evocative designs and colors, Michelle also includes poetic prose, a written reflection that she includes with each piece. These are truly gifts from her soul as she invites us to share in her feelings and reflections on her heritage, the ancient people and their ways, and the power of her people that she represents so beautifully in her work.
Ancestral Blessings
When I was growing up – I spent time with my uncles from Laguna Pueblo. They taught me
reverence, respect to and for, my people, and an understanding of what being a Laguna person was.
I was fortunate to see the hummingbird kachina’s dance to their beautiful songs.
I became lost in the meaning of what they were there for.
I learned that these tiny creatures were rememberances of those gone before.
Every year as they migrate home, they bring with them the blessings of our ancestors.
I see two sisters, mothers, grandmothers, daughters and cousins pray to the soul of our
Mother Earth
and
every living being that walks upon her.
Now and in the afterlife.
~Tsosie
“She’s”, Acrylic on Paper – 9” x 13”
Her images honor people from her own life who have helped her through deep struggles with the strong bonds of familial love and female friendships. She also represents the natural world with reverence but a playful abstraction. Her birds, Buffalo, horses and deer frolic in the sun, a formal spherical element present in most of her work.
“The Hunt”, Acrylic on Paper – 9” x 13”
Her process is extremely slow and deliberate. She starts by mottling the background with her signature texture and color, then carefully paints each figure, each animal or bird in great detail. This can take weeks to render and in the final stages of a piece, she adds meaningful embellishments, such as handprints, spirals and planets. Her finishing touch is a bead of paint, black or turquoise or white that almost look like jewelry inlay. Her style has evolved into one that is recognizable and consistent.
“T’sikumu Pin”, Acrylic on Pastel Paper – 32” x 22”
Michelle’s life has been challenging, but she has overcome great adversity to thrive. Her paintings have been her voice, and she has been able to acknowledge iconic themes, like the importance of friendships between women, and other subjects that speak to her personal struggles and the strength she has gained from them.
