Brad Teare
Capturing the Soul
of the Southwest
Chimayo Trading Staff Report | October 2025
In the heart of Taos, New Mexico, where the desert meets the mountains, artist Brad Teare finds endless inspiration. Known for his bold, textured landscapes, Teare has carved a unique niche in the art world with his mastery of the palette knife painting technique, bringing the rugged beauty of the Southwest to life on canvas. His work, currently on display at Chimayo Trading, pulses with the energy of the land, from the golden glow of sagebrush to the dramatic shadows of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
New arrivals from Brad Teare are now on display at Chimayo Trading Del Norte in the historic Saint Francis Church Plaza, Ranchos de Taos, NM, or online at chimayotrading.com.
“Autumn Sentinel”
Oil on canvas
24″ x 20″
$3200
Teare, originally from Utah, first visited New Mexico over two decades ago and had this to say about the visit…
“I was skeptical about the so-called ‘Taos light’ everyone raved about,” he recalls. “But standing in the desert at dusk, I saw colors and clarity I’d never encountered. It was like the landscape was speaking directly to me.”
That moment sparked a lifelong connection to the region, drawing him back year after year to paint its vast skies and weathered terrain.
“Desert Pilgrimage”
Oil on canvas
24″ x 24″
$4800
What sets Teare apart is applying thick layers of paint to create a tactile, almost sculptural effect, as he explains…
“I want viewers to feel the wind, the heat, the texture of the earth.”
His paintings, ranging from intimate studies of desert flora to expansive vistas, seem to rise off the canvas, inviting viewers to step into the scene. This approach, reminiscent of Van Gogh’s emotive brushstrokes or Rembrandt’s layered depth, transforms the Southwest’s raw beauty into something visceral and immediate.
“Autumn Color”
Oil on canvas
12″ x 12″
$1800
At Chimayo Trading, Teare’s latest collection showcases his evolution as an artist. Pieces like “Autumn Sentinel” and “Desert Pilgrimage” capture the interplay of light and shadow with vibrant hues and dynamic textures. Gallery owner Gabriel Abrums had this to say..
“Brad’s work is a dialogue with the landscape, his paintings don’t just depict Taos—they embody its spirit.”
“Couse House”
Oil on canvas
24″ x 30″
$6400
Teare’s process is as dynamic as his art. He often paints en plein air, setting up his easel in the desert to capture fleeting moments of light. When asked about hos process Brad had this to say..
“The challenge is to work fast enough to catch the essence before it changes.”
Back in the studio, he refines these studies, building layers of paint to evoke the region’s ruggedness.
“Ocean Of Clouds”
Oil on canvas
30″ x 30″
$7000
Brad Teare’s art is more than a visual experience—it’s a celebration of the Southwest’s untamed spirit, rendered with passion and precision. As Taos continues to draw artists from around the world, Teare remains a standout, his canvases a testament to the enduring power of place.
“Joy Of Taos Skies”
