The Paintings of Sheldon Harvey
Color, Spirit, and the First World
Chimayo Trading Staff Report | October 2026
Sheldon Harvey, a Dinรฉ (Navajo) artist born in 1978 near Lukachukai, Arizona, has developed a distinctive painting practice rooted in the stories and spiritual traditions of his people. Working primarily in acrylics and oils on canvas, he translates elements of Navajo cosmology, especially the spirit beings associated with the First World, into a contemporary visual language shaped by abstraction, bold color, and geometric form.
โThe Sacred Flameโ
Oil on gallery wrapped canvas , 2026
48โณ x 36โณ
$7500
โIn this painting, The Sacred Flameโฆ the deer, a timeless symbol of gentle endurance and mountain peace, is brought to life wrapped in the sacred energy of fire. The flames do not destroy; rather, they illuminate the spirit within, casting the animal as a guardian of transformation and renewal. Rooted in Navajo traditional perspective, it honors fire as a cleansing force that breathes eternal motion into the natural world, linking earth and sky.โ

โDark Horizonโ
Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 2026
48โณ x 36โณ
$7500
โDark Horizonโฆ I sought to capture the moment of transition central to our Dinรฉ Emergence story, the threshold where the previous worlds give way to the promise of the surface. Using a stark, striking interplay of cool depths and radiant warm tones, the canvas mirrors the deep uncertainty and awakening of stepping from shadow into light. This painting is a reflection on endurance, the weight of our ancestral journey, and the continuous emergence we experience in our own lives as we seek balance (Hรณzhรณ.)โ

โPillars In Harmonyโ
Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 2026
48โณ x 36โณ
$7500
โPillars Of Harmonyโฆ seven figures stand as living pillars, drawing their strength from the geometry of traditional Navajo sand paintings. Through the lens of modern cubism, high-contrast earth tones collide with brilliant hues, bridging ancestral symbols with my contemporary vision. Their piercing gaze creates an intense dialogue between observer and observedโcapturing the tension and beauty of where traditional heritage meets today’s world.โ

โMaskโ
Wood, Mixed Media, 2026
20โณ x 16โณ x 3โณ
$2500
Harveyโs paintings often feature stylized figures and layered compositions that suggest movement, duality, and the unseen. Influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, his surfaces shift between representational hints of ceremonial imagery and more purely abstract arrangements of plane, pattern, and hue. Primary colors frequently give way to deeper tones of black, white, ochre, and umber, creating works that feel both energetic and contemplative.
โDancing By The Fireโ
Wood, Mixed Media, 2026
30โณ x 40โณ x 7โณ
$7800
Recognition for his painting came early and decisively. At the 2008 Santa Fe Indian Market, Harvey received Best of Show for his oil painting โTrixter Wayโ (also referred to as Trickster Ways), along with Best of Classification, an achievement that underscored the strength of his two-dimensional work.
โStormy Nightโ
Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 2026

His paintings have since entered collections across the United States and beyond, and he continues to explore themes drawn from creation stories, memory, and the living presence of the Holy People.
โThe Sacred Fourโ
Wood, Mixed Media, 2026
14.5โณ x 34.5โณ x 4โณ

Through color, line, and carefully balanced composition, Harveyโs paintings keep Navajo narrative traditions in active dialogue with modern form. They invite viewers not simply to observe, but to sense the continuity between ancestral knowledge and the present moment.
