Behind the wooden doors and beyond the flagstone patio, adventure awaits at Chimayo Trading in Ranchos de Taos!

The plaza itself contains the rich history of 300 years and the most photographed church in North America, San Francisco de Asís Church, sits resplendent in its center.

Originally the center of a small Mexican and Indian 18th Century agricultural community, it was built between 1772 and 1816 replacing an earlier church in that location. New Mexico was then part of the Vice-Royalty of New Spain. It is a fine example of a New Mexico Spanish Colonial Church, and is a popular subject for artists. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

Our gallery of traditional New Mexico art began more than 21 years ago, when the Abrums family began curating for serious collectors from among the very best artists of the historic west, Hispanic art forms as well as Navajo weavings and Pueblo Pottery. Protecting and restoring traditions extends beyond the art to the buildings themselves. Acquiring the second and third historic adobes multiplied our offerings to the public.

But there is one space, behind the wooden doors that has been a work of art in progress until this fall’s reveal. Soon it will be available to rent for a weekend or a season, this living space exemplifies the beauty of earthen walls, polished to shine like stone.

From the private courtyard where you can sit with your morning coffee, or to take in the evening sunset. The shady green space under the apple tree in the backyard invites you to read a book in the sun’s dappled light. This special apple tree is said to be one of the last surviving apple trees from the Spanish Colonial times brought here from Spain. Inside, the one foot thick adobe walls and floor hold onto the cool from the night before, an ancient system of natural air conditioning. This is a rare opportunity to experience this way of life, with all the comforts of home, like electricity and WIFI.

To add to the ambiance, Ranchos Plaza Grill is a short walk away, known for its generous gourmet take on chile culture in New Mexican cuisine. Flowers bloom along the portico of the gallery while artists often set up to paint the famous church, or one of the other examples of adobe architecture.
