Robert LaDuke and the Echo of
Stanwyck’s Shanty

Robert LaDuke’s paintings open a window onto a brightly colored, slightly dreamlike version of mid-century America. Cars gleam, trains cut across bridges, Airstream trailers rest under wide skies, and vintage aircraft slice through clear air. The scenes feel familiar yet slightly heightened, as if pulled from a child’s memory of old magazine ads or a collection of carefully kept steel toys.

Born in 1961 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, LaDuke received a Presidential Scholarship to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994. He has painted professionally for more than two decades. His first gallery exhibition came in 1996 at Mendenhall Gallery in Pasadena, California, and he has shown steadily since, with work appearing in galleries across the Southwest and beyond.

In 1936, while filming Banjo on My Knee, Barbara Stanwyck used a simple mobile dressing room that studio workers and colleagues nicknamed “Stanwyck’s Shanty.” Photographs from the set show a modest, practical trailer, far from the luxurious star trailers of later decades, serving as her personal space between takes.

Decades later, artist Robert LaDuke returned to the visual language of that era in a painting that feels both familiar and transformed. A cream-and-teal travel trailer sits alone in a sunlit desert landscape, its door open to reveal a woman in a light dress standing on the steps. Behind her rises a towering rock formation under a clear blue sky scattered with soft clouds. The scene is calm, luminous, and slightly dreamlike.

LaDuke does not recreate the historical photograph. Instead, he lifts the idea of the 1930s trailer, the same kind of vehicle that appears throughout his work, and places it in one of his signature idealized Western settings. His paintings often draw on mid-century American transportation, childhood memories of road trips, and the bright, graphic quality of old magazine advertisements and steel toys. Here, those interests converge in a single, self-contained image: a solitary trailer at rest, suggesting both travel and temporary belonging.

In connecting a working actress’s on-set trailer to a romanticized landscape, LaDuke bridges documentary history and personal myth. The result is not a portrait of Stanwyck, but a meditation on the enduring appeal of the mid-century trailer itself… humble, self-contained, and always ready for the next horizon.
