At the same time that artists were flocking to Taos, and the acclaimed Taos Society of Artists, another group of great artists were being drawn to Santa Fe, establishing their own traditions and creating their own art colony just south of their famous neighbors in Taos. By 1913, Orrin Sheldon Parsons joined Carlos Vierra, Kenneth Chapman, Olive Rush, and Paul Berlin. What camaraderie, competition and creativity must have resulted from their collective response to all that they found in New Mexico during those years!
Parsons had left New York as a successful portrait artist, but once in New Mexico, he was so consumed with the landscapes and skies, the colors of chamisa and sage and the rounded adobe structures that inhabit the land, he never returned to portraits. Once he had experienced the crisp dry air, vast horizons and vibrant seasons here, he could not find a more challenging and fulfilling subject. His analogous palette captured the light, the life and the spirit of this place like no one else.
Today, the extraordinary paintings of Sheldon Parsons are actively sought by museums, galleries and collectors.
