Born in 1961 in New York, Bakerโs path to art was unconventional. He worked as a musician and carpenter before having an epiphany that led him to painting. Frequent visits to the cityโs great museums awakened a deep creative calling, inspiring him to enroll in art classes at Dutchess County Community College in Poughkeepsie.

His work documents cultures that are rapidly changing or at risk of disappearing, making his paintings both artistic statements and important cultural records. What distinguishes Bakerโs portraits is their emotional honesty and technical skill. Whether working in the luminous softness of pastel or the richer depth of oil, he renders weathered faces, traditional clothing, and quiet moments of daily life with respect and sensitivity. His compositions often place figures against simple backgrounds, allowing the viewer to focus on the humanity and presence of the subject. Many of his paintings feel intimate, as though the viewer has been granted a brief window into another world.
