In Remembrance
American Indians and Alaska Natives have one of the highest representations in the armed forces according to The Department of Defense. From the battlefields of the Revolutionary War, to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day to the front lines of today, Native Americans have served in the U.S. military in every major conflict for more than 200 years, defending this country for centuries.
General. Ely S. Parker, a member of the Seneca Nation, served as General Ulysses S. Grantโs military secretary during the Civil War, and Parker would eventually write the final draft of the Confederate terms of surrender. Native Americans have been instrumental in the unification of the United States.

The term Code Talker was originally coined by the United States Marine Corps and used to identify individuals who completed the special training. The term Code Talker is associated with the bilingual Navajo speakers trained in the Navajo Code during World War II by the US Marine Corps to serve in all six divisions of the Corps. The use of Native American communicators pre-dates WWII. Early pioneers of Native American-based communications used by the US Military include the Cherokee, Choctaw, and Lakota peoples during World War I. Other Native Americans now referred to as code talkers, were deployed by the United States Army during World War II, including Lakota, Meskwaki, Mohawk, Comanche, Tlingit, Hopi, Cree, and Crow soldiers; they served in the Pacific, North African, and European theaters. We have a piece by Narciso Abeyta and one by Carl Gorman who were both Navajo code talkers.

90% of the 42,000 Native Americans who served in the Vietnam War years later, were volunteers. Native Americans have always been present and ready to step up when duty calls, regardless of the role.
In their artwork, many Native American artists have honored the roles the native people have played in defending this country. Likewise, many artists have honored the Native American people and their contributions to this country and its culture in their art.
On this Memorial Day Chimayo Trading remembers with honor,
all those who gave their time
and most importantly their lives in service.
