Looking at a painting by Rae Miller, it is impossible to see how it was done! The layers of color appear organically; her compositions are sophisticated with an air of approachability. She welcomes you with subtle twists and turns of color, a flash of silver leaf, or a corrugated pattern that rises up and disappears beneath waves of perception.

Wax has allowed Miller to create layers and an unconventional sense of background and foreground. Miller sometimes floats a smooth layer over the finished piece, veils of translucent color over evocative textures that disappear, reflect or suggest. On some works, the surface itself is sculptural, creating shadows and color refractions, like looking through water.

One element of surprise in her work is her fresh mark making, a calligraphic element that combined with strong composition creates a dynamic like nothing you have seen before.

Rae Miller has lived all over the world and through her art, has continued her investigation of place, for her own sense of home. She says, “In Portuguese, this longing is called “saudade”: a longing for something in your past, for home, or for something that never was”. Chimayo Trading is fortunate to welcome Rae Miller to the gallery and celebrate her return to Taos where both she and her husband William Martin have found their creative home. Both are career professional artists who had galleries in San Miguel de Allende for decades, gave workshops to hundreds of artists and whose work is collected worldwide. Like many cultural creatives, Taos has called to them and we are so fortunate that they have answered.
