Narciso Abeyta Ha-So-De (1918-1998), was born on the Navajo Reservation, educated at an Indian Boarding School and he served as a code talker in WWII. All of these accumulated experiences combined to keep him from doing art for a full 10 years after he returned home from the war. His painting was eventually revived, a colorful style of whimsy that recalls his earlier training at the Santa Fe Indian School under Dorothy Dunn. Chimayo Trading is offering a rare painting by Narciso in the “flat painting” Navajo style. A man who struggled with life, his art was a way to connect with his larger indigenous family of love and compassion. He was a golden gloves boxer as well, which probably helped him release the emotional legacy of all he had endured.
