Cedar Carving, Mahogany Base
42.5″ x 6″
Base: 15″ width
Nature is embedded with sacredness in the Diné culture and there is no separation between that natural world and our traditional culture. Changing woman is the personification of the natural order of the earth. She represents the cyclical path of seasons; Birth (Spring), Maturing (Summer), Growing old (Fall), and Dying (Winter); only to be reborn in the Spring.
This sculpture depicts the notable thread weaving the tapestry of life and beauty of Diné culture. Corn is the substance that is used in ceremonies, prayers, our creation story, coming of age rituals and our nutrition. The sacred pouch that holds the corn pollen enriches our daily life, through safety and happiness. The blessings of the sacred stones, turquoise, abalone, white shell and yet protects the livelihood of the Diné people and way of life.
