The plumed serpent, Avanyu first appeared a thousand years ago on high canyon walls and caves as a petroglyph, and on black and white Mimbres pottery. A dragon, with an undulating form that suggests water, or sometimes a zig zag form that representing lightning, the “Storm Bringer” undulated through early Casas Grandes designs, snaking its way into the upper Rio Grande Tewa and Tiwa tribes around 1325.

Tammy Garcia is one of the most acclaimed artists of Santa Clara Pueblo. Her mother, Linda Cain and grandmother Mary Cain conveyed a generational legacy and a place in history that Tammy has really made her own. Chimayo Trading has handled the work of her mother and grandmother for many years and now is honored to show our latest acquisition: a masterful bronze with an incised fish and water motif titled, “Cross Current” by Tammy Garcia that demonstrates her sculptural precision, the clarity of her artistic vision and unique sense of design.

Tammy Garcia is one of the most acclaimed artists of Santa Clara Pueblo. Chimayo Trading has recently acquired an entire suite of bronzes by Tammy Garcia that demonstrate her sculptural precision, the clarity of her artistic vision and a unique sense of design informed by her Native American heritage. Through sheer will and determination she evolved as her work extended beyond material, political and cultural boundaries, becoming a strong voice of representation for her people and for herself. Her raw talent was molded by her artistic family, polished by her experience and will only be fully realized in time.
