A self-taught artist whose hyperrealist portraits redefined Western art, Wagner’s legacy endures in the vivid canvases that adorn galleries and museums, reflecting both his technical mastery and his deep connection to the Taos community. Taos itself was Wagner’s muse. The town’s endless skies, jagged peaks, and ancient Pueblo traditions infused his work with a sense of place. In 1982, The New York Times noted the nationally acclaimed painter as America’s “Finest Young Realist”.
