Candy wrappers, cigarette packs, and scraps of printed ephemera collected from more than fifty countries become the clothing, backgrounds, and symbolic details of her subjects… motorcyclists, mystics, dancers, activists, and ordinary people whose quiet determination she holds in high regard. Through this alchemical process of collage and paint, Currier creates work that is at once deeply personal and broadly political, insisting that the common threads of human experience outweigh the differences that so often divide us.
