Christmas Eve at the Pueblo

Taos Pueblo opens to receive hundreds of people on Christmas Eve for one spectacular celebration. As the sun begins to glow on the horizon, the towering fires are lit creating a dramatic golden lightscape. Vespers end inside the church, and the procession emerges: a statue of the Virgin Mary being carried reverently by several men in traditional clothing. A loud crack of a rifle announces the procession and clear the path, hymns can be heard in Tewa, Spanish and English as the statue passes by, and the drum beats on…
To say this is a unique blend of Pueblo beliefs, Native American traditions and Christianity does not go far enough to convey the palpable excitement of Christmas Eve at Taos Pueblo. Firelight dances on faces and the ancient adobe walls, inhabited for over 1000 years. The fires swirl several stories tall, smoke turns into itself rising toward the sacred mountain and the drum beats on…
