Autumn in New Mexico blazes with color. Autumn is a cornucopia of nature’s gifts and something to cherish. So too, is the work in clay by renowned artist of Santa Clara: Autumn Borts-Medlock.

Mary Cain, her grandmother, Linda Cain her mother, and her sister Tammy Garcia all continue the traditions that define Tewa culture and Autumn is another strong link to their heritage. She says, “We carve the shapes of kiva steps, feathers and bear paws, rain clouds and water serpents…like a thousand grandmothers before me”.

Her other supreme advantage as an artist is that she finds inspiration beyond her roots. “Inspiration is everywhere: in the design of a gum wrapper, the angles of a tattoo or feathers fastened to the head dress of a Pueblo dancer.”

Chimayo Trading’s newest acquisition is a jar with deep carving and an inventive composition of forms which carries within it the inherent beauty and creative spirit of Autumn Boris-Medlock, a force of nature.
