The Painted Stories of
Ed Sandoval
By Rebekah Powers | December 2024
Ed Sandoval is one of Taos’ favorite sons. A painter, a personality and a beloved local character, Ed is a larger than life personality, known for his flair for the dramatic. His dynamic paintings often feature a distinctive older man with a cane who appears as a character in a scene. Often alone, this emblematic figure has found a companion in one of the recent acquisitions and they stroll together in the dappled sun of New Mexico.
“Martinez Hacienda”, Oil on canvas – 28″ x 22”
You can trace a lifetime of gratitude by looking at the paintings of Ed Sandoval, who credits his grandparents for teaching him the traditions and stories that have fueled his work for decades. Sandoval is determined to use his talent “to reveal the soul of his upbringing” becoming a curator of traditions and telling the visual history of his culture and that of New Mexico. “My art embodies my feeling of New Mexico as a special, spiritual place.”
We are thrilled to have a special few of his best works available now, from different points in his long storied art career.
“Fall At Mabel Lodge”, Oil on canvas 2007 – 24″ x 36”
Ed Sandoval was born in Nambe, New Mexico and his artistic path was forged by an unfortunate accident when he was 6 years old. Because of his lengthy recovery time, Ed’s father Herminio enrolled him in an art correspondence course which laid a foundation that became his life’s work.
“Afternoon Sun”, Oil on canvas 2007 – 18″ x 24”
As a “painter of place” Sandoval records scenes from daily life in New Mexico with his characteristic flair, generous brushwork and dramatic composition. His spiritual sense of place translates into a visual language all his own making him Taos’ very own storyteller and scribe of cherished traditions. On display at Chimayo Trading where art makes history.
“The Rough Road To Taos”, Oil on canvas 1998 – 40″ x 30” SOLD
