Local Treasures
Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel

By Rebekah Powers | November 2023
Oil paint is more than a medium, a brush more than a tool in the hands of a great painter. The world has concluded that both Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel are master oil painters by awards, medals, honors, and accolades that would take the entire newsletter to list. Chimayo Trading is honored to announce that we are now showing the exquisite oil paintings of both Sherrie and David where they glow on the old adobe walls.

Sherrie McGraw: “Spanish Cristo”, Oil on canvas, 28” x 24”
One beautiful day in New Mexico, Sherrie McGraw came into the gallery and became mesmerized by a very old Spanish Christo on the wall. She couldn’t seem to stop looking at it and returned again and again. That sculpture by a Spanish wood carver became the inspiration for Sherrie McGraw’s latest evocative painting. The original Cristo, on loan from the artist is displayed next to the painting which will be interesting to the many artists who come to our gallery to learn from other artists.
In addition, Sherrie’s astounding portrait of a local Taos legend delves below the surface so beautifully and joyfully painted, finding that individual animating spark. Indeed, her work is an invitation into the mind, heart and soul of a subject, of the viewer and of the artist, a moment suspended, yet so alive.

She paints the mood in the air, an absence that implies a presence, a light that discreetly bends around an edge making you want to follow it. Her painting of the Taos Pueblo Procession on Christmas Eve is a nightscape from above, with fires burning and smoke rising, creating a mystique that is carried on the drumbeat right into your body. Thousands of people over the years have experienced this extraordinary event as one they will always remember. This painting shows the entire scene, beyond a singular perspective, all encompassing.

Sherrie McGraw: “Twilight On The Pueblo”, Oil on canvas, 23” x 28”
The vitality that emanates from McGraw’s paintings and drawings is a result of her fierce focus, and deep understanding of what classical painting and drawing require of the artist. And of all of her gifts, from painting and drawing, to writing and ballet, it is the open heart of Sherrie McGraw that makes her so memorable and well loved. Even with her many shows, teaching schedule, and rigorous painting regime, she finds time to contribute to the vibrant Taos art scene with speaking engagements, writing, and painting demonstrations.

Sherrie McGraw: “Last Of The Herd”, Pastel, 19.25” x 25”
Chimayo Trading is also offering a luscious portrait by David Leffel that demonstrates his mastery. To view a Leffel painting is to step through the frame, into his world. How he achieves this form of transmutation has become the subject of books, articles, interviews, and videos. A documentary of David’s storied life debuts this week, chronicling the painter and the man. In the film, Leffel’s warm wit, intelligence and his love of teaching are revealed through his many storied life, which we have only touched upon.

David Leffel: “Taos Native With Eagle Feather”, Oil on canvas, 14” x 16”
History will remember their accomplishments in New York and beyond, but when they moved to Taos decades ago, the Southwest was given a great gift, one that we treasure more every day. History and art come together in the works of David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw where perception itself is the subject and their consummate skill carries you into a world you can feel.
Witness their works and so much more at Chimayo Trading,
