A Priest Who Paints
By Rebekah Powers | September 2024
Chimayo Trading has acquired a painting by Father John B. Giuliani that beautifully represents the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Rafael, an unusual subject that takes some by surprise.
Father Giuliani began his creative journey in early adulthood before his calling to the priesthood took precedence. After his ordination in 1960 and earning multiple Master’s Degrees in Theology, Classical Studies, and American Intellectual History, Father John dedicated himself to teaching at both high school and college levels.
In 1977, he founded The Benedictine Grange, a small monastic community in West Redding, Connecticut, where he rekindled his artistic passions. His art evolved significantly in 1989 when he began painting icons, studying under a master of Russian Orthodox iconography in New York.
Father John’s work is defined by his unique fusion of traditional iconographic styles with depictions of Native American tribes, including the Lakota, Hopi, Cheyenne, and Navajo. His icons not only celebrate the rich spiritual heritage of these communities but also integrate them into the timeless, formal aesthetic of traditional iconography. Through his work, Father John aims to honor the Native American spiritual presence on this continent, adding a profound dimension to the Christian faith.
Chimayo Trading is now showing a superb painting that exemplifies everything the artist and priest stood for. The auras glow, illuminating the captivating eyes that follow you as you move. Another detail to discover is that Giuliani wrote the names Michael, Gabriel, and Rafael in script as part of the design and intentionality of the piece. For many who take time to stand before it, it is a sense of loving presence emanating from this work that impacts them the most and remains with them.
See with your own eyes the exquisite 3D quality of this piece, stylized for visual impact and spiritual significance. You might be surprised by your own response to this truly masterful work by Father John B. Giuliani, at Chimayo Trading in the shade of the Saint Francis Church of Assisi, which has to be the perfect place to view this painting.
