Giovanna Paponetti
Painter Extraordinaire
By Rebekah Powers | August 2021
“Every brushstroke brings me closer to my quest to discover old instincts and how I relate to the world around me. As I capture the spirit of my models on canvas, they bring life to me as well. It is a union of mutual respect and gives me the courage to fly.”
And fly, she does! Giovanna Paponetti is a master painter. There is no question about this statement. One look at any of her paintings attests to this fact. When she paints a raven, you can feel the wind ruffling the feathers around his throat. When she paints a sunset, you can sense the edge of night claiming the last gasp of sunlight. When she paints a person, they stand before you, more real than reality. You feel the blood pulsing though the veins in a hand. You sense the spirit and personality of this person at a moment in time, captured for posterity by an artist for whom painting is personal. It is a calling that Giovanna Paponetti answers with the confidence born of study and decades of extraordinary work.
In 2012, Giovanna flew to Italy to share her book Kateri, Native American Saint. She was welcomed to Trasacco, in the Abruzzi mountains where her grandfather’s family is from and she visited Celano and the San Giovanni Church where she traced her family back for many generations. Later, she would have an audience with the Pope and show him the painting of Kateri, the first Native American saint.
Her love of storytelling is evident in her work as well. She looks for the timeless moment that transcends the present and connects us with the stories of the past, even as she is creating a new story for the future.
Giovanna is inspired by the natural world, animals and birds and her life long quest for meaning. When you stand before her work, there are subtle indications of her thoughts and feelings about her subjects. It is almost as if you are having a conversation.
One look, and you will agree that Giovanna Paponetti is a master painter and a storyteller of depth and sensitivity. If her quest is to find meaning in life, her paintings are the answers to her quest. Experience the timelessness and life affirming quality of her work for yourself.
