For at least 6 hours every day, Douglas Candelaria paints. He immerses himself in scenes of the American West featuring the majesty and color of the landscape and figures on horseback, often riding at night. There is a mystery to his images, a glimmer of stars splashed across a dark velvet sky, and bands of color from the serapes worn by his Native American subjects.

“As far back as I can remember, I was drawing on paper. My mom would go shopping and when she came home I would empty the groceries so that I could have the paper bags to draw on.”

Today, Candelaria is an accepted and accomplished member of the Pueblo area arts community. He has made it a priority to continue learning from other artists, to stay true to his passion and to contribute to the enduring images of life that he saw growing up in Durango.

His most recent paintings of night scenes have been a big hit with the public and have allowed him to select a different palette of colors from which to paint. Collectors describe his work as calming, his compositions, masterful and his particular ability to paint horses, outstanding.
