Born and raised in Southern Colorado, Doug Candelaria grew up immersed in the rich cultural heritage and striking landscapes of the Southwest. His artistic journey began early, influenced by the natural beauty of the desert and the oral traditions of the Navajo and Pueblo communities.
“I’ve been sketching since I was a kid,” Candelaria recalls. “I’d be eagerly awaitng for my mom to come home from grocery shoppng and the arrival of the bags just to draw on the brown paper.”

Unlike many artists who pursue formal training, Candelaria is largely self-taught, honing his craft through dedication and a relentless passion for painting. For at least six hours each day, he immerses himself in his work, creating scenes that resonate with both personal and cultural significance. Candelaria comments on the endless amount of time spent in his studio..
