New Arrivals from the
Tafoya Family
of Santa Clara Pueblo
Santa Clara Puebloโs traditional name is Khaโpโoo Owinge Valley of the Wild Roses. Santa Clara Pottery and its Pueblo potters are famous for their hand-crafted pottery, specifically blackware and redware with deep engravings.
The Tafoya Family lineage is well known for their contributions to the legend of Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery. Here are five recent acquisitions to the gallery from women of the Tafoya family.
Wedding Vase by Margaret Tafoya (1904-2001), Santa Clara Pueblo – 11โณ x 7โณ
Margaret Tafoya from the artistic lineage of the Tafoya family was a matriarch of Santa Clara Pueblo potters and is regarded as one of the great masters of Pueblo ceramics. Margaret expanded the legacy laid by her mother Sara Fina Tafoya (1863-1949) who laid the foundation of her familyโs unique style, developing what is now known as deep-carved blackware.
Avanyu Pot by Phyllis Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo – 9.5โณ x 8.5โณ
Phyllis Tafoya is a great granddaughter of Sara Fina Tafoya who creates traditional carved redware and blackware using strictly traditional methods.
Wedding Vase by Teresita “Apple Blossom” Naranjo (1919-1999), Santa Clara Pueblo – 12โณ x 9โณ
Teresita is the granddaughter of Sarafina Tafoya, daughter of Christina Naranjo, and older sister of Mary Cain.
Naranjoโs unique style characterized by intricate detailing with deep, crisp carving garnered her international acclaim and challenged the notion that Native American art should remain static and unchanging.
Vase by Clarissa Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo – 6โณ x 4โณ
Clarissa Tafoya learned the art of Santa Clara Pueblo Pottery from her mother Rose Tafoya and grandmother Lucaria Tafoya. She has been making pottery for over 20 years.
Avanyu Pot by Vickie Martinez Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo – 11.5โณ x 9.5โณ
Vickie Martinez-Tafoya was born into the Santa Clara Pueblo (Tewa) in 1967 and is an accomplished and highly regarded Santa Clara Pueblo potter.
