Glenn Fred
Hopi Kachina Carver
By Rebekah Powers | June 2021
Born in 1955, Glenn Fred comes from a tiny Hopi village of Bacavi, where his father was governor. He has 5 brothers who also carve the Kachina dolls that are at the root of Hopi tradition and education.
A spiritual man, Glenn speaks with authority about the place of carving in his culture. He describes the art form as a right of passage for boys who must go through an initiation, the details of which are held in secret. The dolls are a gift to young girls, who carry them around and play with them until the colors have worn off. But the spiritual truths of the Hopi way will be carried forward each generation.
His biggest influences were his 2 older brothers who taught him that the Kachina dancers represent the spirits of Nature. When he carves, he goes into a deep meditative state and says his hands carve while his mind is away. He says the dolls he carves are like his children. “Spiritually, they are a part of you”.
Glenn Fred’s favorite figures to carve include: Longhair, Crow Mother, Eagle, Great Horned Owl and Butterfly Maiden. Aa a sculptor, he is known for his powerful design sense, refined carving skills and an elegant simplicity. Each figure expresses a monumental dignity that represents both the artist and his people.
In addition to many shows, awards andacknowledgements, the artist has studied architectural design, fine arts and pursues drawing and painting as well as sculpture. He was represented by John Abrums and now Alicia and Gabriel Abrums at Chimayo Trading Del Norte where we show an extensive collection of his work, each of which tells a particular story.
