The Singular World of Melissa Zink
(1932-2009)

Melissa Zink was a true Taos creative with a big personality, boundless imagination and experimentation across several platforms of expression that make her stand out. Known for dreamlike dioramas and 3 dimensional storytelling, Melissa Zink was fearless. From intimate mixed media installations, to dynamic figurative bronzes, she had a very unusual inspiration as a visual artist.

Her self described intention was to replicate “the book experience”, that deep state of concentration and absorption that leads to the altered state of consciousness that we experience when engrossed in a book.

Chimayo Trading is delighted to host two of her expressive multimedia figurative forms. Two figures rise like apparitions in a story or a dream, from rectangular blocks, ca. 1995. Depending on your interpretation, they are either tethered to the block or emerging from them into freedom. I am voting for the second one. If you are one of the people who missed the shooting star that was Melissa Zink, you can catch sight of her work, a rare treat.

When she died, the entire Taos a art community honored her artistic achievements, her communal engagement and her beloved eccentricities. One show of her work at the Taos Art Museum honored her entire life with the show:

“Melissa Zink: Her Singular World”

We honor her too, with sculptures that will reach out and grab your attention, like the opening pages of a really good book. On display now at Chimayo Trading where the tulips are blooming along the portico and History and Art meet.
