Claudia Peina
She Who Shines Brightly
By Rebekah Powers | April 2022
Claudia Peina is a Zuni fetish carver who carries forward the creative and original legacy of her family of artists who carve elk antler.
Claudia is known for the dexterity of her carving, the degree of polish and intricacy of designed inlays with turquoise, coral and jet on her figures, often of different kinds of maidens, angels and a series of “Good News Bears” and “Dancing Bears”.
Once you know the secret behind the graceful lean of the maidens, you see the little bears, cut from the rounds of the antler, with the shaded bellies from the interior with the detailed finish and sheen that allow one to fit into your palm like a smooth pebble.
Working with the most unusual of natural mediums, Claudia Peina has taken the traditions of her beloved Zuni tribe, innovating alongside the brother she lost too soon, as well as her aunt, her uncles and her grandfather and she continues to carve a place for all of them in the history of Native American Art.
Chimayo Trading has taken a special interest in this artist and her work over the years, providing a pedestal for the cheerful, carefree, elegant work of Claudia Peina. Come into the gallery to see for yourself and hold a little “Good News” in your hand.s to behold.
