Angie Yazzie
Master of Micaceous Clay
By Rebekah Powers | April 2022
Angie Yazzie’s micaceous clay pieces will stop you in your tracks. You will wonder, what human being could have created a clay vessel with such precision, grace and resonance?
Her pieces are at once simple yet daring. She stretches the language of clay to its edges. She is represented by the finest galleries and museums of the southwest and is collected worldwide.
To understand what drives her, we look to her history growing up on the Taos Pueblo and learning from her grandmother Isabel Archuleta and her mother, Mary Archuleta. Her maternal grandparents owned a curio at Taos Pueblo and sold their handmade micaceous clay pieces there, influencing young Angie to experiment on her own.
And experiment she did! She continues to evolve her hand- building technique with impossibly thin walls and elegant shapes. The taper, the precise cuts, the contemporary designs speak to her mastery of the medium. They are masterpieces that, like the artist herself, appear delicate but are actually quite strong.
To hold one of her glittering black prayer bowls, with Kiva steps and the most delicate of walls is to feel the sacred intention behind the work. Each piece is so light, the sparkle contained within its walls, ephemeral. It is as though you are holding a vessel of light. Angie Yazzie speaks the language of clay, and tradition made new, shaping her place in the history of micaceous pottery of the southwest.
Chimayo Trading Del Norte is proud to represent the ascendant Angie Yazzie of the Taos Pueblo, along with major museums and fine galleries nationwide. Her work will take your breath away and resonate with her collectors for years to come.
