Our latest acquisition by Sheldon Harvey, “The Darkening Eclipse” is a timely interpretation and celebration of an important celestial event that all peoples of the world will soon share again. An eclipse holds special significance in tribal culture. The Navajo believe that when the sun is eclipsed by the moon, the sun undergoes a rebirth. Thus it is a time to reflect; a time for reverence.

Navajo artist Sheldon Harvey is a sensation, winning awards for both his sculptures and his paintings, he has captured the imagination of the public, major galleries and museums. There has never been someone like him who represents the cultural roots of Dine culture in a decidedly modernist way.

Inspired by stories from his childhood of the First World Air Spirit Beings and visually rooted in Modernism with references to Cubism of Picasso, it was natural for him to extend his aesthetics to canvas where Harvey’s painterliness suggest the influence of de Kooning and Kandinsky.

Our newest acquisition may be the largest statement so far in what has become his signature language of saturated colors and suggestive shapes interlocking like petroglyphs.
