The Saint Francis Church of Assisi has stood for centuries as a sacred home of Saint Francis, often depicted with birds. Paintings, photographs and etchings of this church and other missions throughout the mountains, trace the history of art in New Mexico. There seems to be no separation of spiritual inspiration and the creative response.

Those who have visited the Chimayo Trading gallery rooms in the Ranchos de Taos Plaza recall the wide variety of artists we show, many reflecting the strong presence and driving force of the church and religious aspiration in their works. It is interesting to encounter the same subject interpreted so differently from one artist to another. And there is none more widely interpreted, no other church so recognizable than the adobe block sculpture that is the back of the Saint Francis Church of Assisi.

In the warmth of the afternoon, the church shimmers and birds circle recalling the inspiration of St. Francis whose beliefs align with many of the first peoples, and with many forward thinkers who live in Taos and surrounding areas The wooden portico leads you from the church to the old wooden doors of Chimayo Trading.
