Hopi Kachina Dolls

Chimayo Trading has just received many new kachinas from Chester Poleyestewa including some new, larger kachinas.

Poleyestewa is the well known Hopi carver who is inspired to continue the life of some of the rarer kachina identities. It is fascinating to consider the meanings behind the figures, to observe the myriad of details which are clues, and to absorb the intentionality, beauty and design of the art form.

“Black Ogre”, 16” x 10” x 5″

The kachina doll is based on magical supernatural beings who live in the hearts and minds and tradition of Native American Hopi culture. They are impersonated by masked people, village by village, mesa by mesa until their wisdom is distilled into ceremony, singing, dancing and the carving of Kachina dolls.

“White Ogre”, 16” x 9” x 4”

Poleyestewa tells the stories of Hopi history through his charming and delightful dolls. Much like the man himself, they are filled with light and uplifting to behold.

Many specific rare kachina entities are represented in his latest work, along with those familiar to many.
