A New Vision in
Jemez Pueblo Pottery
By Rebekah Powers | March 2022
When you first see a pot by Gabriel Gonzales, you know it is contemporary because you have never seen any other piece of pottery like it! It is as if he has created an entirely new category in artful sculpture, yet he brings a sophistication and fluidity to the age old traditional shape of the classic melon bowl design. The high gloss, the perfect proportions, the rich black of the surfaces all speak to the mastery of Jemez Pueblo potter, Gabriel Gonzales.
Born in the Oak Valley Clan of the Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico, potter Gabriel G. Gonzales is the son of Persingula Gonzales and the Grandson of Anacita Chinana.
Gabriel learned how to make pottery from his mother, Persingula, and maternal uncle, Donald Chinana, both of whom are well-recognized Jemez Pueblo potters.
Today, Gabriel Gonzales is renowned for his work, incorporating the traditional methods with very particular shapes and designs that belong to him alone. His creativity drives him to make each piece unique, constantly searching for the next perfect form and expression of his art form.
He gathers his clay from the clay fields at Jemez Pueblo, and tempers it with ash from the nearby super-volcano deposits. He uses paints and clay slips from the local plants and earth. The pottery is hand-coiled, without the use of the wheel, hand carved, stone polished, and wood-fired outdoors, as is the Jemez Pueblo tradition.
Gabriel’s pottery is in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian Washington D.C. and now on display and available to be added to your collection at Chimayo Trading.
