Tammy Garcia’s “Cross Current”

Tammy Garcia is one of the most acclaimed artists of Santa Clara Pueblo. Her mother, Linda Cain and grandmother Mary Cain conveyed a generational legacy and a place in history that Tammy has really made her own. Chimayo Trading has handled the work of her mother and grandmother for many years and now is honored to show our latest acquisition: a masterful bronze with an incised fish and water motif titled, “Cross Current” by Tammy Garcia that demonstrates her sculptural precision, the clarity of her artistic vision and unique sense of design.

Through sheer will and determination she evolved as an artist and began to extend beyond material, political and cultural boundaries. Her raw talent was molded by her inheritance, polished by her experience and will only be fully realized in time.

“Cross Current” is a beacon of her work in bronze, incorporating elements of nature, ancient and Pueblo motifs and bands of repeating designs incised and composed in groundbreaking ways. The monolithic, twisting forms forge a new path, not just in her artistic trajectory, but in the larger arena of Native American sculpture.
