The Journey of Angie Yazzie
Chimayo Trading Staff Report | February 2026
Angie Yazzie is a highly regarded master potter from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. Born in 1965 in Taos, she has lived at the pueblo her entire life. She learned pottery from her mother Mary Archuleta from Taos Pueblo, and especially her maternal grandmother, Isabel Archuleta. Her grandparents ran a curio shop at Taos Pueblo, where she was exposed to pottery making from a young age (around 7โ9 years old). She returned to it after graduation and is largely self-taught beyond family influences.
Come to the Chimayo Trading Gallery in Ranchos de Taos or visit our website at chimayotrading.com to see the complete collection of Yazzieโs sparkling Taos Pueblo micaceous pottery, including some New Arrivals weโve recently acquired.
4.75โณ x 8โณ
$1050
Yazzie specializes in traditional Taos Pueblo micaceous clay pottery. This clay, sourced from sacred sites on pueblo lands, naturally contains mica flakes that give the finished pieces a distinctive sparkling, golden, or shimmering appearance (often described as “glittery”). The mica also makes the pottery functional for cooking or holding liquids, as it seals well and withstands heat.
โKiva Step Bowlโ

$1250
Her pieces are hand-coiled (built from rolled coils of clay, no wheel), smoothed, and pit-fired outdoors using wood like cedar, bark, or other fuels, which creates unique fire clouds, the blotchy dark markings from the firing process, and varied color tones ranging from golden/orange to black sometimes achieved through reduction firing.
โJourney Bowlโ
11โณ x 17.5โณ
$3950
Her Journey Bowl is one of her notable bowl forms, also made from natural hand-coiled micaceous clay. The name “Journey Bowl” evokes symbolic or narrative elements related to life’s path, pilgrimage, or cultural/spiritual journeys in Native traditions. The stepped shape of the rim represents a journey taking one on an upward climb then returning back down, as life often tends to do in many ways. Her Journey Bowls are referenced in collector contexts where enthusiasts admire and seek to acquire them alongside pieces like her wedding vases seen below.
โWedding Vaseโ
25โณ x 12.5โณ
$4800
Her work is known for elegant forms with thin walls (though she sometimes makes thicker ones for practicality), refined shapes, and a balance of tradition and artistry. Common forms include jars like “grandmother” ollas or melon jars, wedding vases, prayer bowls, water jars, fluted-rim pieces, rectangular bowls, and more.
8.5โณ x 7โณ
$1400
She has won numerous awards, including “Best of Pottery” at shows like Taos Invites Taos (1996), multiple top prizes at the Santa Fe Indian Market (e.g., Best of Class, Best of Division, and First Place for Micaceous Ware in 2017), and placements at institutions like the Wheelwright Museum, Millicent Rogers Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Smithsonian.
โGrandmother Ollaโ
13โณ x 18โณ
$4800
Her pottery is sold though Chimayo Trading Del Norte and she has also demonstrated her techniques publicly like her coiling demos on video. She is considered one of the few contemporary masters continuing authentic Taos micaceous traditions.
โPrayer Bowlโ
4.25โณ x 8.5โณ
$1900
Each Yazzie piece is lit with the sparkle contained within its walls. It is as though you are holding a vessel of feathery light. Angie Yazzie speaks the language of clay, and tradition made new, shaping her place in the history of micaceous pottery of the southwest.
โFluted Bowlโ
6.5โณ x 19.5โณ
$3100
Chimayo Trading Del Norte is proud to represent the ascendant Angie Yazzie of the Taos Pueblo, along with major museums nationwide. Her work will take your breath away and resonate with her collectors for years to come.
