An Eye For Water: Rod Hubble

A collection of new and exciting paintings by Rod Hubble have arrived. Fifty years of painting in New Mexico have given him time to find the touchstones of the land under the wild and beautiful sky. Over time, Hubble gravitated to the water, painting the ever changing surfaces, the layers, reflections and refractions that only water can create. Hubble recreates the scene in colors that touch on iridescence for which his work is known and appreciated by collectors throughout the southwest and beyond.

A highlight of Hubble’s career was a commission to paint the Rio Grande Gorge from the lookout near UNM in Taos. The glorious landscape was gifted to the family who donated the land to preserve and protect the river and the beautiful wildlife corridor that is one of the treasures of Taos.

Rod Hubble immerses himself in what he sees as he paints in the open field overlooking a pond or perched on the edge of the Rio Grande Gorge. The land and sky and flowing waters become part of him. He expresses intimate detail as well as the large sweeping vistas in his dramatic compositions. Occasionally the artist reaches into his own memories and sometimes, his mind entertains what lies beyond the obvious bordering on fantasy or magic.

Chimayo Trading welcomes the works of Rod Hubble like a prayer for rain. His colorful palette enlivens and illuminates the adobe walls of our extended gallery rooms. Come in for a stroll and you may find a bright spot of luminescent water in one of the incredible landscapes by New Mexico’s own, RS Hubble.
