Stunning Works By Darren Grant

Three exquisitely realistic oil paintings by Darren Grant are now on view at Chimayo Trading. Grant exhibits a searing eye for detail and an intensity of color that seem to transcend oil layers and canvas to become reality itself. There is a moment of disbelief, a deeper investigation and then, a marveling. Darren Grant is truly a magician, masterfully presenting a transcendent moment in time, a shimmering, ephemeral memory that can last a lifetime.

Born in Long Beach, California in 1967, he rode the wave of the times and began to show promise early, training in oil painting at 12. His uncommon talent led to a lucrative career in architecture where Grant excelled in precise rendering and design, and acquired an understanding of perspective drawing that would serve him well. This background is shared with his greatest idols and mentors: Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

At 24, Darren decided to focus all of his energy on painting and began his deep dive into the history of painting and the traditional techniques of the Old Masters by studying with William Martin, himself a master painter. Grant also made a study of landscapes by The Hudson River School of Artists and began to distill his distinctive style.

Darren Grant took inspiration from Northern New Mexico for these small but powerful works, illuminated in jewel tones that nevertheless ring true. One snowy scene of an old wooden cart in front of an adobe wall is directly across the street from our gallery in Ranchos Plaza.
