Standing the Test of Time:
20 Years of Family and Business
By Rebekah Powers | August 2023
When you walk into Chimayo Trading Del Norte for the first time, you are transported. The room itself, the floor, the vigas all set the stage for an experience out of time. Every corner, every wall, every niche reveals another special treasure or an authentic artifact of times gone by, centuries in scope.
The family business of Alicia and Gabriel Abrums is one built on patience and persistence and began 20 years ago this year. They were childhood friends who evolved into partners in marriage, life and business, becoming stewards of history. Together they recognized the importance of their contribution to the people who create as well as to the people who collect.
Gabriel’s father John Abrums established Chimayo Trading located in Chimayo. Gabriel grew up around the many artists, jewelers, and weavers who came to John with their work. He was able to showcase it to people who understood and respected the generational legacy behind it.
Gabriel and Alicia Abrums extended the family business northward, just south of Taos. They chose a very special location in Ranchos de Taos, itself rich in history and they have since expanded their collections with gallery rooms stretch all the way down the wooden portico. The front of the gallery still has places to tie up your horses. The other distinction of this location is the Saint Francis Church of Assisi, a famous church emblematic of the Ranchos community that rebuilt their little town around the church 300 years ago.
Our gallery rooms are spacious, originally home to the Spanish families. You might go so far as to say, resilience is built into the adobe walls, evidenced by the hand hewn boards in the ceiling, and the metal patches on the floor.
Today, when you enter these rooms of living history, thoughtful displays catch and keep your eye. You will see exquisite pottery made from the natural clay of Puebloan lands with designs that echo through indigenous cultures all over the world. You will find the original works of artists whose names you know, and other great works by names you have never heard. Contemporary art is also alive and well in Northern New Mexico at Chimayo Trading. There is an energy of contrast and complement, curated like a museum but accessible to the public, to hold and to have.
We will be celebrating 20 years in the business
